Nutrition, fitness, protein, and veganism

Nutrition is a difficult topic for me for a variety of reasons. First: i am vegan. This means that i eat no animal-based foods or by-products this includes all types of meat, dairy, and eggs. I am vegan for the animals and because i believe in the mantra "vote with your wallet". I wont, however, try and persuade you to go vegan too on this blog, because i don't want this blog to force my "political views" down anyone's throat, but i do want it to be clear that i am on a vegan diet since that complicates things a little bit when it comes to eating.

Second: i used to have an eating disorder. My relationship with food will therefore always be somewhat skewed. I think that most women overall have a complicated relationship with food, which makes the topic of nutrition difficult to talk about.

Third: i am an extremely picky eater. I also have ADHD which makes me hyper focus on certain foods sometimes. This means that i can be very obsessed with a certain type of food for days or weeks, and then one day i wont care about it at all. This makes planning meals difficult.

Taking all these things into consideration; you can probably kind of figure out why i hate the topic of nutrition, but it is an important one nonetheless. As they say:

muscles are build in the kitchen, not the gym

Right now i try to focus on getting the appropriate amount of calorie intake and also get enough protein. I am currently eating in a deficit, because i want to lose some unwanted fat. Once i am happy where i am at, i will have to figure out what my maintenance amount of calories is. I am expecting to be able to eat more calories the more that i train, and i don't really know how to adjust my calories once my muscles grow, but that is a thing for future me to figure out i guess.

I am currently trying to eat as clean as possible, with a lot of protein, and with as little carbs as possible. This is very difficult for someone who loves bread and pasta. Luckily i have discovered veggie pasta which has been very good so far, and a store that i don't shop at often apparently has protein pasta which i will have to check out one of these days. I also have one cheat day a week where i can eat whatever junk i want within a calorie limit. This usually results in pizza, tortellini, lasagna, chocolate, and chips (not all at the same time of course).

I think it is important to incorporate a cheat day. This makes it easier to hold on to your healthy diet the rest of the week since you are "working towards your cheat day". It also keeps you sane, since, if you have any cravings for unhealthy foods, you can just eat it on your cheat day. And i have realized that it keeps me thinner somehow. I don't believe in the whole "it speeds up your metabolism" bs, but maybe there is some truth to it after all?

To figure out what and how i want to eat i have been looking around on the internet for nutrient and protein dense vegan foods for inspiration and i have found two websites that were helpful.

First i found an article on Men's Journal: What Vegan and Plant-Based Athletes Eat to Stay Ultra-Jacked. This helped me a lot. They interviewed different type of vegan athletes and it was interesting to see what an average day for them looks like. I guess you can just google other athletes' their diets if you aren't vegan to get a feel for what work-out heavy people eat. I would say it is a bit easier to figure out your diet when you aren't vegan, since there is way more information out there. For example, forums like Bodybuilding can help out a lot with seeing what other people eat, but also recipes, and of course overall dietary advice. There is also a Vegan Bodybuilding website and forum but i haven't really used that website at all so i don't know if it is any good. For overall advice on nutrition i usually like to read the normal Bodybuilding forum. There is a lot of contradicting advice out there tho, so make sure to do proper research before taking anyone's advice.

Another helpful website is the r/vegan1200isplenty subreddit for meal ideas. Since i am a somewhat tiny person i do not need to eat as many calories as most people, which can make it difficult to plan meals or to not overeat. To find protein heavy recipes i searched "protein" within the subreddit and there are many fun and easy to make meals that are protein heavy.

Other than that i went to the website of my main supermarket and i went through a bunch of different meat replacements (and there are a looooot, so it took me a few days to go through all of them). And i searched for the most protein dense meat replacements. I then made a list with the ones with the highest protein density and the ones that i could incorporate in my meals the most and i went to my store and bought a few of each. I have a big freezer so i can bulk buy meat replacements (especially handy when they are on discount!). I also found that soy bits (i believe they are called "Soya granules") are very heavy in protein density, but they didn't have those in the store so i need to separately purchase them from a website some time. I did buy a tofu block to make my own meat replacements, but it is such a hassle (and i'm lazy) that i'd rather just buy things that are ready to use not to make it harder on myself.

I think it is important to have fun with your foods and to eat food you actually like. Since i am a picky eater (mainly with veggies), it is difficult to incorporate them in my diet. If you also have issues with including healthier foods in your diet, make sure to first add the healthy foods you do like. Or prepare them in a way that you do like them (no, smothering veggies in cheese doesn't count). Then later on you can always adjust your diet or start incorporating other healthy foods. Just know that your diet doesn't have to be perfect from the start. Even just a teaspoon a day of veggies is progress if you aren't used to eating them every day. You can always try small portions of healthier foods and then work your way up to bigger portions. Take your time, and learn what you do like to eat!

I also try to limit my sugar intake to zero (which is almost impossible) (sugar is in literally everything), which can be quite challenging. I like to eat dessert, but the only protein heavy vegan yogurt that i have access to has a lot of sugar in it. So it is challenging. Right now i just eat the dessert whenever i crave it and i try to not beat myself up too much because it has "too much sugar". Along the line i hope to replace it with something healthier.

I don't really know what else to add to this. I might post a full week of eating here some time, in the hope that i improve in the future. It would be fun to compare the two a year from now or something.

Right now i try to aim for a minimum of 50 grams of protein a day. And i would like to work my way up to at least 100 grams. Since i am not used to tracking my protein, or eating protein heavy foods, i think 50 is a good number to start out with, since i can only increase it from here on out.

Currently i try to get most of my protein from meat replacements and protein smoothies (protein powder with frozen fruit and mylk). I have a really good recipe for a protein smoothie that is about 200 calories, and 30 grams of protein and it tastes like ice cream! It's sooo good. I will post it here some time. I hope to increase my protein intake by eating more protein dense veggies in the future

Leanbeefpatty also made a good video on eating vegetarian for an entire day. She got about 1800 calories with 143 grams of protein which is nuts!

I don't really know what else to add to this post. I am currently eating a spinach bowl with fysh stycks and minced soy so i'm gonna finish that and as a dessert i will have some fresh fruit juice. Adios!

My first week gym routine (legs)

My best friend and i started working out at home in December 2022. He was mainly targeting his arms and shoulders, and i wasn't sure what i wanted so i did a bit of everything. In March 2023 i decided i wanted to grow my legs. My entire life i have been embarrassed of my legs. I am a healthy weight, but short in stature and my legs always have been kind of "chubby" in my eyes. And i was done!!! I knew the only way i was going to ever be happy with my legs was probably if i were to starve myself (i have battled an eating disorder when i was in my teens), and i didn't want to do that. So, instead, i decided to GROW MY LEGS. And i mean grow. I want Chun-Li legs! I want to be able to crush my enemies  between my legs with ease.

So last week i went to the gym and signed up. My first day was with a trainer from the gym who also made a schedule for me. I had already extensively researched what i wanted to do for leg training, but i was willing to try out his routine first. I feel that he put me on a full-body ultra newbie routine, which might have been caused by the fact that i didn't mention to him that i was already working out at home, and had my own routine in mind. This is the routine he came up with for me (which honestly seems like a generic full body routine to me with a slight emphasis on legs, rather than a proper leg focused routine):

  • 10 minutes elliptical
  • 10 minutes stair stepper
  • leg press 3x15  (30kg)
  • adductor 3x15 (20 kg)
  • abductor 3x15 (20 kg)
  • glute machine 3x15 (15kg)
  • core machine? 3x15 (20kg)
  • lat pulldown 3x15 (15 kg)

I am 5'3 and about 110 lbs / 50 kg with zero muscle, so my weights aren't that impressive. After the first workouts i didn't feel it in my legs, at all. I had done work-outs at home every other day since December, and doing leg-only since February, before joining the gym and my legs always felt weak after training them. The following day i expected some muscle pain but only the inside of my thighs hurt... but nothing else. I went back on Wednesday and did the same routine after extensively researching the exercises that i was supposed to do in the hopes that i could target my legs better... but on Thursday no pain again. Followed by Friday where i tried higher weights cause i was sick and tired of not feeling anything, but i couldn't do most reps with higher weights so i overall felt defeated.

On Sunday i worked out at home. The gym closes early in the weekend and i like to sleep in so i decided to just do my routine at home:
  • Bulgarian split squat 3x12 (7,5kg)
  • Single leg hip thrust 3x20
  • Romanian dumbbell deadlift 3x12 (7,5kg)
  • Frog opens (idk what they are called lol) 3x12
  • Resistance band leg routine 3x
  • Calf raises 3xfailure

On Monday i FELT THE BURN. It hurt so bad!!! But the good kind of hurt, where you know you worked out hard. One of the reasons i started going to the gym was not only cause i wanted to grow my legs bigger, but also cause i was outgrowing my 7,5kg weights and i didn't want to invest in higher weights if i knew i was going to outgrow them fast. I was annoyed that i felt the burn at home but not in the gym. So today, tuesday, i decided to switch up my routine in the gym a little:
  • 10 minute elliptical
  • 10 minute stair stepper
  • leg press 3x15 (30kg>40kg>50kg)
  • romanian dumbbell deadlift 3x12 (8kg>10kg>10kg)
  • adductor 3x15 (20kg>25kg>25kg)
  • abductor 3x15 (20kg)
  • glute machine 3x15 (15kg)

It was really scary to go to the weight section and grab dumbbells and do my romanian deadlifts. I was scared that my form was bad, and that people would be looking, but i did it anyways! I was really proud of myself. I could do 12 reps with the 8kg but with the 10kg i could only do 10, mainly cause my arms hurt!!! Doing more and more weight on the leg press was awesome too. It felt very rewarding, and the last reps with my bodyweight(!!!) made my entire face contort, but i was very proud of myself and my legs definitely felt weak afterwards.

I observed other people a little in the gym today too and i found out that my gym has a bulgarian split squat stand and i found out where the cable kickback machine is; two things that i wanted to incorporate in my original work-out program. This is the original program that i had in mind before i joined the gym:

  • Bulgarian split squats 3x8-12 (8>10>12)
  • Cable kickbacks 2x10-15
  • Hip thrusts 3x10-15
  • Hip abductions 2x10-15
  • Leg extension 4x15
  • Leg press 3x10

I want to slowly but surely move into my own routine. I will go back on Thursday and i will probably ask someone there to show me how the cable kickback machine works, because i want to ditch the glute machine; you have to lay over a bench and then push back your leg, and today that made me very dizzy cause it pressed on my stomach so much. So i want to exchange the glute machine for cable kickbacks. I can also not fully extend my leg with the glute machine, which means that i can't properly incorporate my glutes. I think that the cable kickback is way better. Here is a video of the dumb machine so you can see for yourself how awkward it is:

I also totally ditched the core machine. I only used it twice. It is a very awkward machine that didn't even work-out my core, and plus i do my core on my off days at home. The machine works by having weight loaded on your back and then you bend forward, it always seemed to work-out my back very well but it didnt do anything for my core. I've seen an old grandpa use that machine, so that mainly seems the target audience, so why did i get put on that machine :( Here is a video (from the same channel as the previous video) on how the awkward abdominal crunch machine works:

I probably want to keep the lat pulldowns in my routine but i might start incorporating arms/shoulders on its own separate day. I don't really want to work-out my arms or shoulders because i only want to grow my legs, but if my arms and shoulders are weak it is difficult to carry higher weights, so that is a problem.

Currently my schedule looks like this:
  • Mon/Wed/Fri: legs at gym
  • Tue/Thu: core at home
  • Saturday: active off day
  • Sunday: legs at home
  • Mon/Wed/Fri: core at home
  • Tue/Thu: legs at gym
  • Saturday: legs at home
  • Sunday: off day
And repeat.

I might switch one of the core days for arm days. My dream legs right now are Will Tennyson's legs in this video:

Someone in the comment section wrote this out so i copy pasted it hehe.

Well, i hope this was informative. It certainly felt nice to write it all out. Tomorrow is technically my core day, but i might switch it for an arm day at home. I will have to figure that out... i also don't know if i will write about my food intake because i am still trying to figure that out... but i will keep that for another post!

Sick and tired of fitness social media

It is 2023 and i am starting a blog on fitness. I know blogs are totally out of style but i -- don't -- care --!!! I like to write, and i like to read, and lately the internet isn't very keen on reading. I like to read people's progress during whatever, and i like to read about their lives and what not. Most things these days are in video format, which can also be fine, but now that TikTok has come on the market everything has gone to sh!t.

Not only that, but the entire fitness industry seems very pornofied and sexualized and fake. Women constantly squatting with their big (fake?) asses in the camera and men having circle jerks with each other on who has the biggest pecs or whatever. It feels so artificial and fake. The worst for me is when i am researching certain work-outs for women and i don't know if the lady who i am looking at has had plastic surgery or wears butt pads, so i am not even sure if their work-out routines are actually working, and for men i never know if they use steroids or not. It is very tiring.

Everyone also seems to want to work-out for TikToks and youtube videos and what not, instead of actually educating people on fitness. They also always try to sell you on something, so even reading an article can sometimes be misleading. And sometimes the ones who are genuine are difficult to spot since genuine people on the internet these days seem rare.

I have, however, found a few social media channels that i actually enjoy and that are very informative and for me those two are mainly Jeremy Ethier and LeanBeefPatty. I only follow them on Youtube and i don't consume their content elsewhere. I know Patty is big on TikTok and stuff but i don't use TikTok. I sometimes look up some of her workouts on her IG but that is about it. Jeremy Ethier is overall just very informative. I also watch the occasional Jeff NippardScott Herman, and Bret Contreras video. I also like MovementbyDavid's short videos about STAYING FLEXY!!! And i put on the occasional Will Tennyson video cause i find him entertaining. I've also watched some Sean Nalewanyj videos but i find him very annoying, i don't know why, but some people might find him informative so i am sharing him here anyways.

It is difficult finding female fitness people that i actually like since most of them (i feel) sexualize themselves too much and feel very fake, which is why i like Patty so much since she seems humble and not so self-obsessed. We are also the same height and share kind of the same background story, so it is nice being able to find myself in her fitness journey.

Soooo yeah, i thought i would start a fitness blog in the year of 2023 to keep track of my progress and maybe someone else one day will stumble upon this and it will help them out too. Right now i am kind of lost in the sea of information that is out there, so i will take you on a journey where i try to figure out what works and what doesn't work (for me) (it might not work for you) (please keep that in mind!!!).

If you also are starting your fitness journey i would urge you to stop going on social media and comparing yourself with everyone out there, most of those people have been training for years to get where they are now so it isn't healthy comparing yourself with them at all! Never consume content from people who make you feel bad about yourself! Instead, start a blog like me (so i don't have to feel so lonely) and write about your journey and inform and educate others on what you have learned and spread the knowledge!
