I make this delicious protein smoothie that tastes like a milkshake!!! It's very easy to make and you can add as many additional ingredients as you want! This is the base of the protein smoothie:
- 1 frozen banana
- scoop of protein powder
- 150ml/5.07 fl oz milk of choice
And then you throw it in the blender and you blend :) Make sure that the banana is entirely blended! If you feel the consistency is too thick you can add more milk. You can also start off with 100ml milk and add more as you blend to make sure to get the desired consistency. The total is usually about 250/300ml - 8.5/10floz, so make sure to use a tall glass!
Banana
I usually use a smaller banana and break it into pieces. I then put it into a Tupperware in the freezer. I usually store up to 3 bananas at once. Bananas CAN go bad in the freezer and they taste disgusting when they do, so don't keep them there longer than 2 weeks i would say.
The reason i break it into pieces is because it makes it easier to blend. I've had a few times that i still had chunks of banana in my smoothie even after blending it for a long time. When you break it into pieces it just goes faster. and also makes storing it kind of easier.
When you only have access to bigger bananas you can always just use half a banana! Or, if you want, you can use the big banana as well of course, but then you might need some more milk to balance it out.
Always use a frozen banana if you want the milkshake feel to your smoothie!!! When you freeze a banana and blend it, it kind of becomes banana ice cream, which gives it that milkshake feel!
Protein + Milk
What protein yo use is up to you. I think it also depends on what milk you use, which is why i write about them under the same header cause it makes more sense. When i use a vanilla based protein powder i tend to go for a soy chocolate milk. The way the vanilla blends with the chocolate and banana is so nice! I once used a banana bread protein powder that felt more versatile. The milks i use the most are: vanilla soy, banana soy, chocolate soy. Sometimes i use the protein chocolate soy for the extra bit of protein! I would say just try out different flavors and see what you like, since everyone has different tastes after all :)
Additional ingredients
Because the base of the smoothie is very basic (but still tastes awesome) you can add whatever your heart desires! I used to sometimes add one, two, or even three cherries for the extra sweetness and a little bit of bitterness. Sometimes i also add chocolate sprinkles. I usually fill up my glass half way, then add some sprinkles, stir, and then add the rest of the smoothie and add some more sprinkles and stir. It is nice to have that extra bite sometimes. You can also just take a dark piece of chocolate with a grater or a rasp and use that. Or you can even cut dark chocolate in chunks and add that as an extra to the smoothie. I would recommend always using dark chocolate (as pure as possible) cause it is the healthiest. Most milk chocolate are just milk and sugar. And dark chocolate has a lot of health benefits too!
I sometimes also add a little scoop of chia seeds, you don't really taste them when you put them in the blender and blend well. They tend to thicken the smoothie and also chia seeds are healthy so that is one of the reasons i add them.
There's probably way more you can add! But these are the things i have tried and worked for me.
Just some thoughts
I personally think it is important that you enjoy the things you consume. I never tried blending my protein powder with water cause i knew i would hate it. I have tried making my protein smoothie differently a few times and if i don't like it, it will take more than an hour for me to entirely drink it. Drinking your protein shouldn't be a punishment!!! Make it enjoyable while still keeping it healthy. I like to drink this when i come home from the gym, and sometimes i make an extra one after dinner as a dessert (this is usually when i add the chocolate chunks, it's such a nice thing to snack on!). I also often add a straw. You can also buy a fun glass for example. I found this really cool gradient pink/yellow glass in the store not long ago. It is a big glass and perfect for drinking my smoothie out of. Don't think that "it will be a waste of money" or whatever. As i said, if you enjoy the things you consume (or do) then you will be more likely to do it in the future. Make it fun!
Bonus: Clear Protein
Not long ago i bought some clear protein. The flavor was lemon. I mixed it with water and it was kind of meh. I thought it would taste like lemonade maybe, but it didn't. It then stood on my shelf for a while until i got the brilliant idea to mix it with 0 sugar Sprite/7-up and now it tastes so good!!! I usually don't like consuming soda, even when it is 0 sugar, but when i weigh the pros and the cons, i'd rather just easily consume my protein with some shady fake sugar than none at all. And the best thing is that you can use this also for pre-workout drinks or hydration, or anything else that is powder based. Adding a couple of ice cubes and you are done :)
My clear protein does say that you have to mix one scoops with 600ml/20.29 fl oz.to get the 25grams of protein, but i usually just make one glass with 15 grams
I am thinking about maybe using bubble water and some lemon juice to see if i can create the same effect win a healthier way, so i will look into that! Stayed tuned!!!
